Sting
Biography
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, widely recognized as Sting, was born on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. An accomplished English singer-songwriter, musician, activist, and actor, Sting rose to fame as the frontman, primary songwriter, and bassist of the iconic new wave band, The Police, from 1977 until their disbandment in 1986. Following the group's split, he embarked on a successful solo career in 1985, blending genres such as rock, jazz, reggae, classical, and world music.
Throughout his career, Sting has achieved remarkable commercial success, selling over 100 million records both as a solo artist and with The Police. His accolades include three Brit Awards, notably the Best British Male Artist in 1994 and the Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2002. He has also earned a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and received four Academy Award nominations. Sting’s impressive tally of 17 Grammy Awards further underscores his musical prowess. In 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Police.
Sting's contributions to music have been recognized with numerous honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music. In May 2023, he was celebrated as an Ivor Novello Fellow, marking another high point in his illustrious career.
