Bashar Rahal
Biography
Bashar Mounzer Rahal, born to a Bulgarian mother, Mariana, an interior designer, and Lebanese father, Mounzer, an OB/GYN, spent his early years in Bulgaria after relocating there at the age of six. His passion for acting ignited when he began performing in television sketches at just 12 years old. By 14, he had joined a professional theater ensemble named "Tears and Laughs," participating in over 15 productions that included works by Shakespeare and Chekhov. His talent took him to prestigious international festivals, such as those in Avignon, France, and Thun, Switzerland.
Rahal made his film debut at 15 in "Ivan i Aleksandra" (1989), which paved the way for further roles in television and film. He completed his education at The First English Language High School in Sofia before earning a Master's degree in Dramatic Arts from the National Academy of Theater and Film Art. Shortly thereafter, he became a permanent member of the national youth theater and performed as a guest actor at the National Theatre in Sofia.
Bashar gained immense popularity through the hit comedy show "It Can't Be," akin to "Saturday Night Live," created by Nellie Andreeva, which won the prestigious "Golden Melon" award for best comedy. In 1997, he hosted "The Late Night Show" on Channel 3 Sofia, where he met his future wife, Kalina Rahal. The couple moved to California in 1999, allowing Bashar to further his acting career; he graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. He was notably considered for the role of Azamat Bagatov in "Borat" and received acclaim for his performance in "War, Inc." Subsequently, he starred in Danny Lerner's action film "Direct Contact" and was cast as Boris in Dominic Sena's "Whiteout," featuring Kate Beckinsale.
