Biography

Betty Jane Bierce, famously known as Jane "Poni" Adams, was a prominent American actress who made her mark in radio, film, and television during the 1940s and 1950s. Born in San Antonio, Texas, her family relocated to California when she was just two years old. In high school, she showcased her talents in both violin and drama, ultimately becoming the concert mistress of Los Angeles's all-city high school orchestra. Though she received a prestigious scholarship to Juilliard, Adams opted instead to hone her craft at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Her career took off with her debut on Lux Radio Theatre, followed by work with the Harry Conover Modeling Agency, where she earned her nickname "Poni." While attributed to her passion for horses, the moniker was likely chosen to create a more distinct persona. In 1945, she reverted to her birth name, Jane Adams, partly influenced by military personnel who had popularized the new name.

Adams' on-screen journey began with the 1942 short film So You Want to Give Up Smoking. She gained recognition for her portrayal of Nina in House of Dracula and made notable appearances in early adaptations of major DC Comics franchises, playing Vicki Vale in the Batman serial and a character in the first Superman television series.

On May 21, 2014, Adams passed away in Bellingham, Washington, at the age of 95, and was laid to rest alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, remembered as Betty J. Turnage.
