Ryuhei Matsuda (松田 龍平, Matsuda Ryūhei), born on May 9, 1983, is a prominent Japanese actor renowned for his work in both film and television. He gained significant recognition for his role as the young samurai Sōzaburō Kanō in Nagisa Ōshima's acclaimed 1999 film, Taboo. This performance marked a pivotal moment in his career, propelling him from obscurity to stardom and earning him the "Newcomer of the Year" award at the Japanese Academy Awards, along with accolades from the Blue Ribbon, Kinema Junpo, and Yokohama Film Festivals for "Best New Actor."
Matsuda's versatility as an actor is evident in his diverse filmography, which includes the portrayal of high school student Kujo in the 2001 film Blue Spring and the charismatic rock star Ren Honjo in the 2005 adaptation of Nana. In 2013, he was cast as a Japanese gangster in Berandal, the sequel to the 2012 Indonesian hit The Raid, showcasing his ability to tackle complex roles.
In 2020, Matsuda took on the challenging role of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa in A Stranger in Shanghai, a film that explores the author's experiences as a reporter in the bustling city.
