Biography

Eileen Brennan (September 3, 1932 – July 28, 2013) was a celebrated American actress, renowned for her dynamic roles across film, television, and stage. Her performance as Captain Doreen Lewis in the 1980 comedy Private Benjamin earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Additionally, she garnered a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her memorable portrayal of Mrs. Hughes in the beloved sitcom Newhart.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Brennan embarked on her acting journey in the theater, making a notable Broadway debut in the 1963 musical Little Mary Sunshine. Her stage career flourished as she showcased her talent in other Broadway productions, including iconic shows like Hello, Dolly! and Annie.

Brennan's film career commenced with her role in the 1967 satire Divorce American Style, leading to significant supporting performances in acclaimed films such as The Last Picture Show (1971), The Cheap Detective (1978), and The First Wives Club (1996). She also starred in the cult classic Clue (1985) and the popular Sister Act (1992).

On television, Brennan's impressive resume included appearances in iconic series like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Cheers, and Will & Grace. Despite her battle with multiple myeloma, diagnosed in 2001, she continued acting, including a role in the 2011 film The Big Year. Eileen Brennan passed away at her home in Los Angeles on July 28, 2013, leaving behind her husband, David John Lampson, and daughter, Emily.
