William Hootkins
Biography
William Michael Hootkins, born on July 5, 1948, in Dallas, Texas, emerged as a prominent figure in the acting world. In the early 1970s, he relocated to London, where he resided until 2002. Hootkins honed his craft at Theatre Intime during his time at Princeton University, where he also became fluent in Mandarin Chinese. His acting training continued at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and he was part of the same theater group as Tommy Lee Jones at St. Mark's.
Hootkins' film and television career began in the mid-1970s, showcasing his talent in a variety of memorable roles. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Rebel pilot who meets his demise during the Death Star assault in "Star Wars." Other notable performances include his role as the bumbling assistant to Topol in "Flash Gordon," Major Eaton in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and a corrupt police lieutenant in "Batman." He also played a sleazy voyeur in "Hardware," a South African police chief in "Dust Devil," and lent his voice to characters like Orson Welles in BBC Radio plays.
His television appearances spanned numerous acclaimed series, including "The West Wing" and "Cagney and Lacey." Hootkins received critical acclaim for his performance as Sir Alfred Hitchcock in the play "Hitchcock Blonde." Sadly, he passed away from pancreatic cancer on October 23, 2005, leaving behind a rich legacy in the arts.
