Rohini Hattangadi, born on April 11, 1955, is a distinguished Indian actress celebrated for her contributions to film, theatre, and television. With an impressive array of accolades, she has secured two Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award, making history as the sole Indian actress to win the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Kasturba Gandhi in the acclaimed film Gandhi (1982). A graduate of the prestigious National School of Drama in New Delhi, Hattangadi initially focused on theatre before transitioning to cinema, making her debut in Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan in 1978.
Her captivating performances in notable art films, such as Arth (1982), Party, and Saaransh (1984), have earned her widespread recognition. Following her acclaimed role in Gandhi, she frequently received offers for character roles in mainstream Hindi films, often being typecast as matriarchal figures, despite being relatively young for such roles.
