Dudley Moore
Biography
Dudley Stuart John Moore CBE (19 April 1935 – 27 March 2002) was a multifaceted English actor, comedian, musician, and composer whose career spanned several decades. He gained fame in the UK during the 1960s as a prominent voice in the British satire movement. Moore was one of the talented four behind the groundbreaking comedy revue Beyond the Fringe, which played a significant role in popularizing satirical humor during that era. His partnership with fellow performer Peter Cook on the BBC series Not Only... But Also showcased their contrasting comedic styles, with Moore’s playful antics complementing Cook’s dry wit. Their collaboration earned them the British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance in 1966.
By the mid-1970s, Moore transitioned to Hollywood, where he achieved significant success in comedy films. His notable works include the cult classic Bedazzled (1967), alongside Cook, and major hits such as Foul Play (1978), 10 (1979), and the iconic Arthur (1981). For his role in Arthur, Moore received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and won a Golden Globe, later adding another Golden Globe to his accolades for Micki & Maude (1984). In recognition of his contributions to entertainment, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1987 and was appointed CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in November 2001, shortly before his passing.
