Bill Williams
Biography
William Herman Katt, recognized professionally as Bill Williams, was a prominent American actor born on May 15, 1915, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents who emigrated from Germany. He pursued his education at Pratt Institute and initially made a name for himself as a professional swimmer, showcasing his talents in underwater performances. His acting career began with a minor role as a theater usher in the classic film King Kong (1933).
During World War II, Williams served in the United States Army, but he returned to acting post-discharge. He adopted the name Bill Williams and made his official film debut in The Blue Room (1944). His career took a significant turn when he starred alongside Susan Hayward in Deadline at Dawn (1946). However, he is best remembered for his leading role in the television series The Adventures of Kit Carson, which aired from 1951 to 1955 and featured 105 episodes.
Following the conclusion of Kit Carson, Williams' fame dwindled until he regained prominence in 1957 with a co-starring role opposite Betty White in Date with the Angels. He portrayed Federal agent Martin Flaherty in the pilot episode of The Scarface Mob (1959), which later became part of the popular series The Untouchables, although the role was recast. Williams turned down the lead in Sea Hunt, believing it wouldn't succeed, a decision that allowed Lloyd Bridges to achieve success in the role. He did star in Assignment: Underwater and made several guest appearances on Perry Mason, where he acted alongside his wife, Barbara Hale. Williams continued to work in low-budget sci-fi films and guest spots until his retirement, leaving behind a legacy of diverse performances. He passed away on September 21, 1992.
