Biography

James Best, originally named Jewel Franklin Guy, was a versatile American actor whose extensive career spanned seven decades, from July 26, 1926, until his passing on April 6, 2015. Best was known for his work across television, film, and stage, as well as his talents as a writer, director, acting coach, artist, college professor, and musician. He frequently made guest appearances on various country music and talk shows throughout his career.

Best began his journey in Hollywood with a contract at Universal Studios in 1949, where he crossed paths with notable actors such as Julie Adams, Piper Laurie, Tony Curtis, and Rock Hudson. His film career officially kicked off in 1950, with a strong emphasis on Westerns. He shared the screen with icons like Audie Murphy in films like Kansas Raiders (1950) and The Cimarron Kid (1952), and collaborated with Raymond Massey in Seven Angry Men (1955) and Randolph Scott in Ride Lonesome (1959). He also gained a cult following for his role in the science fiction film The Killer Shrews (1959) and its sequel, Return of the Killer Shrews (2012).

However, Best is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of the comical Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on the beloved television series Dukes of Hazzard. He reprised this iconic role in The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) and The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood (2000), showcasing his enduring impact on popular culture.
