Gianni Garko
Biography
Gianni Garko, born in Zadar, Dalmatia (formerly part of Italy and now Croatia), embarked on his artistic journey by relocating to Trieste in 1948 to study at the prestigious acting school of the Piccolo Teatro di Trieste. He later moved to Rome to continue his training at the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica. Garko's acting career took off in the 1950s, where he showcased his versatility across various genres, particularly excelling in westerns and Italian-style comedies. As his career progressed, he became known for his work in RAI television films.
One of Garko's most memorable roles was that of Sartana, a character he portrayed in several spaghetti westerns, collaborating with directors Gianfranco Parolini and Giuliano Carnimeo. His performance in the 1965 film Il compagno don Camillo, as Scamoggia, the party's photographer tasked with documenting a twinning project, further solidified his status in Italian cinema.
Beyond film, Garko made notable appearances on television, including his role as astronaut Tony Cellini in the series Space: 1999, specifically in the episode "The Dragon's Domain." He also voiced Gwent in "The Infernal Machine" episode of the same series and played industrialist Martin Fisher in Suspects. From 2002 to 2004, he portrayed entrepreneur Pierfrancesco Moretti in the soap opera Vivere. Garko's extensive career also included various commercials, showcasing products like olive oil and wine, and he remains active today primarily as a character actor on television.
