Dick Foran
Biography
John Nicholas 'Dick' Foran (June 18, 1910 – August 10, 1979) was a notable American actor celebrated for his roles in western musicals and his supporting contributions to various dramatic films.
Initially credited as Nick Foran, he joined Fox Film Corporation in 1934. By 1935, standing at 6-foot-2 with distinctive red hair, he transitioned to Warner Bros., adopting the name Dick. Not only was he a talented actor, but he also showcased his vocal abilities in productions like Change of Heart (1934), featuring Janet Gaynor. His attractive looks and amiable demeanor made him a preferred choice for supporting roles. He made his debut as a singing cowboy in Moonlight on the Prairie (1935), which marked the beginning of his journey in this genre. His other notable cowboy films included Song of the Saddle (1936), Guns of the Pecos (1937), Empty Holsters (1937), and Cowboy from Brooklyn (1938).
In 1938, Foran signed with Universal Studios, where he diversified his acting career, appearing in a range of films from horror to comedies alongside Abbott and Costello, including Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942). Additionally, he played significant roles in works such as The Petrified Forest (1936) and The Mummy's Hand (1940).
One of his final appearances was in Donovan's Reef (1963), alongside his longtime friend John Wayne, and his last role was as the prospector "Old Timer" in Brighty of the Grand Canyon (1967), featuring Joseph Cotten and Pat Conway.
