Mako
Biography
Mako, born in Kobe, Japan, is the son of the esteemed children's author and illustrator Taro Yashima. As a young child, he relocated to the United States with his family after World War II, officially joining them in 1949. Mako enlisted in the military during the 1950s, and in 1956, he became a naturalized American citizen. Initially pursuing a degree in architecture, Mako's journey took a turn during his military service, where he uncovered his passion for acting. He honed his craft at the Pasadena Community Playhouse, embarking on a successful career in theater and film.
Mako gained prominence in Hollywood, becoming one of the first Asian-American actors to achieve widespread recognition. He was celebrated for his roles in various films and television series, including notable performances in "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) and the television series "Hawaii Five-O." His contributions to the entertainment industry earned him respect and admiration, paving the way for future generations of Asian-American actors.
In his personal life, Mako was married to actress Shizuko Hoshi, and together they raised two daughters, both of whom pursued careers in acting, along with three grandchildren. Mako's legacy continues to inspire many, highlighting the importance of representation and diversity in the arts.
