Biography

James McDaniel, born on March 25, 1958, in Washington, D.C., is a distinguished American actor celebrated for his impactful roles across stage, film, and television. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Lt. Arthur Fancy on the acclaimed series NYPD Blue, a role that showcased his remarkable talent in a gritty ensemble cast. McDaniel's versatility was further displayed when he appeared as a police officer in the ambitious but short-lived series Cop Rock in 1990. Additionally, he made a significant mark in the cinematic realm with his performance as a close advisor to the renowned activist Malcolm X in the 1992 film Malcolm X. His television repertoire also includes the role of Sgt. Jesse Longford on ABC's Detroit 1-8-7.

Throughout his career, McDaniel has received notable accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for his work on NYPD Blue. He also earned a Daytime Emmy Award in 2006 for Outstanding Performer in a Children/Youth/Family Special for his role in Edge of America.

An alumnus of SUNY Purchase, McDaniel honed his craft alongside fellow actor Jay O. Sanders in the same acting company, laying the foundation for his successful career in the performing arts.
