James Hayter

Biography

James Hayter (23 April 1907 – 27 March 1983) was a prominent British actor known for his memorable performances. Born in Lonavala, India, he spent his formative years in Scotland before passing away in Spain. Hayter is particularly celebrated for his roles as Friar Tuck in the 1952 film The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men, and as Samuel Pickwick in that same year's adaptation of The Pickwick Papers. With his distinctive rotund physique and resonant voice, he was well-suited for these characters.

After attending Dollar Academy, Hayter graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His acting career commenced in 1936 with the film Sensation, but was temporarily stalled due to World War II, during which he served in the Royal Armoured Corps. In his later years, he appeared in various television series, including The Forsyte Saga (1967), The Onedin Line, and Are You Being Served?. Notably, his 1946 series Pinwright's Progress is recognized as one of the earliest examples of the half-hour sitcom format on British television. Additionally, he lent his voice to the original UK advertisements for Mr. Kipling cakes, a role that ultimately led to his exit from Are You Being Served? as the company incentivized him to leave for a lucrative bonus.

In the film Oliver!, he portrayed Mr. Jessop, the bookshop owner, appearing in key scenes involving the character Dodger and Oliver Twist. Outside of his professional life, Hayter enjoyed retreating to a treehouse in his garden, where he would diligently rehearse his lines.
