Biography

Nella Bielski (1930s – 4 November 2020) was a talented writer and actress of Ukrainian origin who made her mark in France. Born in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, she passed away on November 4, 2020, in Antony, a suburb of Paris. Bielski pursued her studies in philosophy at the prestigious Moscow State University. In the early 1960s, she met and married a French journalist, which enabled her to leave the Soviet Union and relocate to France.

Bielski ventured into the film industry, showcasing her acting skills in various productions. In 1970, she published her debut novel, "Voronej," which was well-received in French literary circles. This marked the beginning of her prolific writing career, during which she penned several novels that gained recognition in English-speaking countries, including "Oranges for the Son of Alexander Levy" and "The Year is '42."

In addition to her novels, Bielski collaborated with her English translator, John Berger, on several theatrical works. Among these was "A Question of Geography," which was notably performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Bielski's contributions to literature and theater left an enduring legacy, reflecting her unique perspective shaped by her experiences across cultures. Her life and work continue to inspire many.
