Jonathan Hyde
Biography
Jonathan Hyde, born on May 21, 1948, in Brisbane, Queensland, is an accomplished actor originally from Australia who has made a significant impact in the English entertainment scene. He is particularly recognized for his portrayals of notable characters such as J. Bruce Ismay, the managing director of the White Star Line in the film Titanic, Egyptologist Allen Chamberlain in The Mummy, and the hunter Sam Parrish/Van Pelt in Jumanji. Hyde is married to Scottish soprano Isobel Buchanan, and they have two daughters, including the actress Georgia King.
A member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hyde's theatrical prowess was showcased when he played Ferdinand in a production of John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi in 1985. He is an alumnus of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and holds the title of Associate Member. Hyde was also part of the original cast of Not the Nine O'Clock News, notable for its abrupt removal from broadcast during the 1979 General Election.
His filmography includes a diverse array of titles, such as The Contract, The Curse of King Tut's Tomb, Land of the Blind, and Richie Rich. Hyde also starred in the 1989 BBC miniseries Shadow of the Noose, portraying the distinguished barrister Edward Marshall Hall, in addition to appearing in several mystery television series, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Midsomer Murders.
In 2007, Hyde took on the roles of Dr. Dorn in Chekhov's The Seagull and the Earl of Kent in King Lear as part of an RSC repertory that featured notable actors like Ian McKellen and Frances Barber. Both productions toured internationally before concluding their run at the New London Theatre on January 12, 2008. He later reprised his role as Kent in the 2008 television adaptation of King Lear.
