Sun Chien
Biography
Sun Chien, originally named Suen Jian-yuan, was born on January 26, 1955, in Taiwan. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his two sisters. His journey into the film industry began in 1976 when renowned director Chang Cheh sought new talent for his film Chinatown Kid. Sun, a skilled Tae Kwon Do practitioner, stood out among numerous hopefuls and secured a supporting role, marking the start of his acting career.
Sun quickly became a prominent figure in Hong Kong cinema, earning recognition as one of the "Five Venoms," a celebrated group of actors in martial arts films. He signed a lucrative eight-year contract with the Shaw Brothers Studio, where he frequently collaborated with Chang Cheh, appearing in numerous action-packed and martial arts films, solidifying his status in the industry.
After the Shaw Brothers shifted their focus to television productions in 1986, Sun continued his career by contributing to various lesser-known films through Tomas Tang's Filmark International. In the early 1990s, he transitioned to roles behind the camera, taking on responsibilities as an action director and assistant director across several projects. Ultimately, Sun Chien retired from the film industry in 1992, leaving behind a legacy defined by his impactful contributions to martial arts cinema.
