Biography

Julie Bishop, born Jacqueline Wells on August 30, 1914, was a celebrated American actress who made her mark in both film and television, featuring in over 80 productions from 1923 until 1957. She began her career as a child actress, quickly gaining recognition for her performances in various Laurel and Hardy films, such as "Any Old Port!" and "The Bohemian Girl." In 1941, she adopted the stage name Julie Bishop after signing a contract with Warner Bros., which required her to rebrand herself due to her previous association with B-movie roles.

During her time at Warner Bros., she appeared in 16 films, including a notable supporting role in the 1943 romantic comedy "Princess O'Rourke," alongside stars Olivia de Havilland and Robert Cummings. Bishop's career continued to flourish as she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in "Action in the North Atlantic" (1943) and portrayed Ira Gershwin's wife in the biographical drama "Rhapsody in Blue" (1945). She wrapped up her Warner years with the 1946 film "Cinderella Jones."

Bishop's later career included a poignant role in "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949), where she played a struggling wife to John Wayne, and she reunited with him for the 1954 film "The High and the Mighty." Over her lifetime, she was married three times and had two children from her second marriage to Gen. Clarence A. Shoop. Julie Bishop passed away from pneumonia on August 30, 2001, her 87th birthday, in Mendocino, California.
