Rosemary Leach

Biography

Rosemary Leach (18 December 1935 – 21 October 2017) was a distinguished British actress known for her work in theatre, television, and film, as well as her singing talent. Born in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, Leach came from an academic family; both of her parents were educators and she was related to anthropologist Edmund Leach. She received her formal training at a grammar school and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Leach's career took off in the 1960s when she gained recognition for her role as Susan Wheldon in the acclaimed series The Power Game (1965-1969), a drama centered around the corporate world. She became a staple on British television, appearing in notable productions such as Aldonza/Dulcinea in the 1973 adaptation of Don Quixote alongside Rex Harrison and portraying Emilia in the 1981 BBC version of Othello, featuring Bob Hoskins.

Her performance as Aunt Fenny in the 1982 miniseries The Jewel in the Crown further solidified her reputation. In 1987, Leach earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in A Room with a View (1985) and later starred in An Ungentlemanly Act, where she played Lady Mavis Hunt.

Leach also had a recurring role on BBC Radio 4's No Commitments and made guest appearances on various series, including Waterloo Road. In her later years, she portrayed Queen Elizabeth II multiple times, including in the 2009 film Margaret, showcasing her versatility and enduring appeal in the performing arts.
