Biography

Kartal Tibet (March 27, 1939 – July 1, 2021) was a multifaceted force in Turkish cinema, leaving an indelible mark as an actor, director, screenwriter, and producer.

Born in Ankara, Tibet appeared in nearly 200 film and television productions. He first captured audiences as the lead in comic book-inspired adventure series *Karaoğlan* and *Tarkan*. Throughout the 1970s, he starred opposite legendary actresses including Hülya Koçyiğit, Türkan Şoray, and Fatma Girik, becoming a beloved leading man. Transitioning behind the camera, he made his directorial debut in 1977 with *Tosun Pasha* and went on to direct 56 films. Over twenty of these featured the iconic comedian Kemal Sunal, including classics like *Davaro*, *Şendul Şaban*, and *Şabaniye*, for which Tibet also wrote the screenplays.

His enduring contributions to Turkish cinema earned him the Golden Orange Film Festival Lifetime Honor Award in 2002 and the Yıldırım Önal Memorial Award in 2006. Kartal Tibet passed away in Istanbul on July 1, 2021, at the age of 82, leaving behind a rich legacy that shaped the landscape of Turkish popular film.
