Biography
Ralph Waite (June 22, 1928 – February 13, 2014) was a distinguished American actor renowned for his compelling performances across television and film. He is best remembered for his iconic role as John Walton Sr. in the beloved CBS series The Waltons, which aired in the 1970s and for which he also took on directorial duties on occasion. Waite's versatile talent shone through in the acclaimed mini-series Roots, where he portrayed the complex character of Slater, the first mate on a slave ship.
In the latter part of his career, Waite continued to captivate audiences with his work in various series. He played Reverend Norman Balthus in HBO's surreal drama Carnivàle for 16 episodes across two seasons from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, he had memorable recurring roles, including Father Matt on the soap opera Days of Our Lives, and as Jackson Gibbs, the father of Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), in the popular procedural NCIS. Waite also made a significant impact as Hank Booth, the grandfather of Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), on the hit series Bones. Through a career spanning several decades, Ralph Waite left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, showcasing his remarkable range and depth as an actor.
