Biography

Catherine Townsend "Kay" Johnson (November 29, 1904 – November 17, 1975) was an accomplished American stage and film actress. Her journey to stardom began when she caught the attention of Cecil B. DeMille, who signed her to a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after a compelling performance in the play *The Silver Cord* at the Repertory Theater in Los Angeles, produced by Simeon Gest. Johnson made her film debut with *Dynamite* in 1929, a project that faced delays due to her recovery from an appendectomy.

Throughout the early 1930s, Johnson's talent shone brightly in a variety of films. She appeared in *The Ship from Shanghai* (1930), *This Mad World* (1930), and *Billy the Kid* (1930), alongside notable titles like *The Spoilers* (1930), featuring Gary Cooper and Betty Compson, and DeMille's *Madam Satan* (1930). Her impressive filmography also includes *Passion Flower* (1930), Frank Capra's *American Madness* (1932), *Thirteen Women* (1932), and *Of Human Bondage* (1934), which starred Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, among others. She continued to act in films like *Jalna* (1935) and *Mr. Lucky* (1943), where she shared the screen with Warner Baxter in the adaptation of Elinor Glyn's *Such Men Are Dangerous*.

Johnson's last film role was in the 1954 British production *Jivaro*, also known as *Lost Treasure of the Amazon*, marking a significant chapter in her illustrious career.
