Biography

Elsa Sullivan Lanchester (October 28, 1902 – December 26, 1986) was an accomplished British actress whose impressive career spanned across theatre, film, and television, as well as a background in dance.

Beginning her dance training at a young age, Lanchester transitioned to performing in theatre and cabaret soon after World War I, paving the way for her success over the next ten years. In 1927, she met fellow actor Charles Laughton, and they married two years later. Lanchester made her mark in British cinema with minor roles, notably portraying Anne of Cleves alongside Laughton in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933). After Laughton’s rise to fame in American films, the couple relocated to Hollywood, where she continued to take on small film parts.

Her portrayal of the Bride in Bride of Frankenstein (1935) garnered her significant acclaim and became one of her most iconic roles. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Lanchester appeared in various supporting roles, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in Come to the Stable (1949) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957), the latter marking her twelfth collaboration with Laughton. Following Laughton's passing in 1962, she revitalized her career with memorable roles in Disney films such as Mary Poppins (1964), That Darn Cat! (1965), and Blackbeard's Ghost (1968). Her later work included the successful horror film Willard (1971), and one of her final appearances was in Murder By Death (1976).
