Sonny Chiba
Biography
Sonny Chiba, born Shin'ichi Chiba on January 23, 1939, and passing on August 19, 2021, was a renowned Japanese actor and martial artist. He gained prominence as one of the first stars to leverage martial arts skills for his fame, initially captivating audiences in Japan before gaining international recognition. Raised in Fukuoka, Chiba engaged in various sports during his high school years, including baseball, volleyball, and gymnastics, even competing at the National Sports Festival of Japan. He began his martial arts journey as a university student, achieving a black belt in Kyokushin Karate by 1965 and a fourth-degree black belt by 1984.
Chiba's acting career took off in the 1960s with roles in tokusatsu superhero series, notably taking over the lead role in "Seven Color Mask." His major breakthrough came in 1974 with "The Street Fighter." He later gained fame in Hollywood, featuring in films like "Kill Bill: Volume 1" (2003) and "Fast & Furious 3: Tokyo Drift" (2006). He succumbed to complications from COVID-19 in Tokyo at the age of 82.
