Biography
James Todd Smith, widely recognized as LL Cool J—an abbreviation that stands for Ladies Love Cool James—is an iconic American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He ranks among the pioneering figures of hip hop who attained significant commercial success, alongside contemporaries like the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC.
His career took off after signing with Def Jam Recordings in 1984, marking a pivotal moment with the release of his hit single "I Need a Beat" and his groundbreaking debut album, Radio, in 1985. LL Cool J sustained his commercial and critical acclaim through a series of successful albums, including Bigger and Deffer (1987), Walking with a Panther (1989), Mama Said Knock You Out (1990), Mr. Smith (1995), and Phenomenon (1997). His twelfth studio album, Exit 13, released in 2008, concluded his long-standing contract with Def Jam.
A two-time Grammy Award laureate, LL Cool J is celebrated for numerous hip hop tracks like "Going Back to Cali," "I'm Bad," and "Rock the Bells," alongside R&B favorites such as "Doin' It" and "Hey Lover." Recognized by VH1 as one of the "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time" in 2010, he made history in 2017 as the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors, and in 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence.
LL Cool J ventured into acting with a role in the film Krush Groove and later appeared in the movie Wildcats. He enjoyed a successful run in films like Last Holiday and Any Given Sunday, and from 1995 to 2000, he starred in his sitcom, In the House.
