Biography
Philip Haywood Glenister, born on February 10, 1963, in Harrow, Middlesex, is a distinguished English actor celebrated primarily for his portrayal of DCI Gene Hunt in the acclaimed British series *Life on Mars* and its follow-up, *Ashes to Ashes*. Glenister comes from a theatrical lineage; his father, John Glenister, was a director, and he has a brother, Robert Glenister, who is also an actor.
Glenister's journey into acting began after he was inspired by a student play featuring his brother. He honed his craft at the Central School of Speech and Drama, transitioning from a career as a film publicist and a runner for the Robert Stigwood Organisation. His early television appearances in the 1990s included roles in *Minder*, *Silent Witness*, and *Heartbeat*. Notably, he played DCI William Bell in the 2003 political thriller *State of Play*.
His breakout role as Gene Hunt, a tough, uncompromising detective, won him widespread acclaim and solidified his status in British television. Glenister also starred in *Demons* as the demon hunter Rupert Galvin and appeared in the film *Calendar Girls* (2003). In 2007, he showcased his versatility as Mr. Carter in the BBC drama *Cranford*, alongside luminaries like Judi Dench.
