Biography

Arthur Mathews is a distinguished figure in British comedy, known for his significant contributions to a variety of sketch shows. His career includes notable projects such as *Harry Enfield and Chums*, *The All New Alexei Sayle Show*, and the beloved *Ted & Ralph* skits from *The Fast Show*.

However, it was the acclaimed sitcom *Father Ted* (1995–1998) that truly showcased Mathews' talent. Co-created with Graham Linehan, the series became a cultural phenomenon, airing on Channel 4 and leaving a lasting impact on British television. The duo had previously collaborated on the comedy *Paris* (1994), also for Channel 4, marking the beginning of their successful partnership.

Mathews also lent his writing skills to the first series of *Big Train*, though he continued solo after Linehan's departure in the second season. His versatility is evident in other comedic works, including *Brass Eye*, *Jam*, *Black Books*, and *Toast of London*. Additionally, he crafted memorable sketches for Kevin Eldon, such as the notable "Amish Sex Pistols."

In 1999, Mathews single-handedly wrote *Hippies*, a sitcom set in the 1960s, featuring actors Simon Pegg and Sally Phillips. His contributions to comedy were acknowledged in late 2003 when The Observer recognized him and Linehan as two of the 50 funniest individuals in television history.
