George Sanders
Biography
George Henry Sanders (July 3, 1906 – April 25, 1972) was a multifaceted British actor, singer-songwriter, music composer, and author whose remarkable career spanned more than four decades. Renowned for his distinctive upper-class English accent and velvety bass voice, Sanders became a sought-after performer, often embodying sophisticated yet villainous roles.
He is perhaps most famously recognized for his portrayal of Jack Favell in Alfred Hitchcock's classic film *Rebecca* (1940) and Scott ffolliott in *Foreign Correspondent* (also 1940), which showcased one of his rare heroic performances. His role as the Saran of Gaza in the box office hit *Samson and Delilah* (1949) further solidified his reputation, while his portrayal of Addison DeWitt in *All About Eve* (1950) earned him an Academy Award.
Throughout the 1950s, Sanders continued to impress audiences, taking on the character of Sir Brian De Bois-Guilbert in *Ivanhoe* (1952) and King Richard the Lionheart in *King Richard and the Crusaders* (1954). In the 1960s, he brought to life the iconic villain Mr. Freeze in a *Batman* two-part episode (1966) and lent his voice to the sinister Shere Khan in Disney's animated classic *The Jungle Book* (1967). Additionally, he portrayed the suave crimefighter The Falcon in the 1940s and starred as Simon Templar, The Saint, in five films from the 1930s and 1940s.
