Ann Rutherford
Biography
Ann Rutherford, born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on November 2, 1917, emerged from a talented lineage, being the daughter of opera singer John Rutherford and actress Lillian Mansfield. Shortly after her birth, her family relocated to California, where Ann took her first steps into the performing arts, making her stage debut in 1925.
After nine years of performing in theater and radio, Ann made her film debut in *Waterfront Lady* (1935), quickly gaining recognition for her skills. That same year, she starred in three additional films: *Melody Trail* and *The Fighting Marines*. By the age of 17, she secured a contract with MGM, where she became a household name through her beloved role as Polly Benedict in the *Andy Hardy* series alongside Mickey Rooney. Her first appearance as Polly came in *You’re Only Young Once* (1937), followed by three more installments within the same year, including *Love Finds Andy Hardy*.
Rutherford's career reached new heights in 1939 when she portrayed Careen O'Hara, Scarlett O'Hara's younger sister, in the iconic *Gone with the Wind*, a film that solidified her status in Hollywood. Notably, she successfully negotiated a raise with MGM's Louis B. Mayer by demonstrating her financial needs, a testament to her determination.
After her final *Andy Hardy* film in 1942, she freelanced, featuring in hits like *The Secret Life of Walter Mitty* (1947) and *Adventures of Don Juan* (1948). Although she transitioned to television in the 1950s, her last film appearance came in *They Only Kill Their Masters* (1972), and she retired after the 1976 film *Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood*.
