Alan Young
Biography
Alan Young, originally named Angus Young, was a celebrated English-Canadian-American actor, comedian, and television personality, born on November 19, 1919, in North Shields, Northumberland, England. The son of Scottish parents, Young faced significant health challenges during his childhood, particularly severe asthma, which often confined him to bed. This limitation led him to cultivate a passion for radio, and by his teenage years, he was performing on local radio shows.
In 1941, Young relocated to the United States, where he advanced his career in radio and transitioned into television. His noteworthy work in the sitcom The Alan Young Show earned him an Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1950, solidifying his status in the entertainment industry.
However, Young is perhaps best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Wilbur Post in the beloved series Mister Ed, which aired from 1961 to 1966. The show, centered around a man who could converse with a talking horse, became a cultural phenomenon and garnered Young another Emmy nomination for his performance.
Throughout his career, Young remained active in both television and film, and he lent his voice to Disney’s Scrooge McDuck from 1974 until his passing in 2016. A multi-talented individual, Young was not only an accomplished actor but also a skilled musician, producing several music albums.
Married three times and the father of four, Alan Young passed away on May 19, 2016, at the age of 96, leaving behind a rich legacy in the arts.
