Ian Thomas Garner MacKaye, born on April 16, 1962, is a prominent American musician, songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose career has significantly shaped the punk rock landscape since 1979. He gained notoriety as the lead vocalist of the pioneering hardcore punk band Minor Threat, which is widely regarded for its raw energy and lyrical intensity. MacKaye also played pivotal roles in the post-hardcore movements through bands such as Embrace and Fugazi, and he currently performs with The Evens.

As a co-founder and owner of Dischord Records, based in Washington, D.C., MacKaye has been instrumental in promoting independent music and the DIY ethos within the punk community. His influence extends beyond performing; he has produced notable albums for a variety of artists, including Q and Not U, John Frusciante, 7 Seconds, Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, and Rollins Band.

MacKaye is also recognized for coining the term "straight edge" during his time with Minor Threat, advocating for a lifestyle free from drugs and alcohol. Although he did not intend for it to become a widespread movement, the concept has resonated with many.
