Barry Sullivan

Biography

Barry Sullivan (August 29, 1912 – June 6, 1994) was a prominent American film actor whose career spanned more than five decades, during which he appeared in over 100 films from the 1930s through the 1980s.

Hailing from New York City, Sullivan's entry into the world of acting began while he was in college, where he played semi-professional football. During the later years of the Great Depression, his tall stature of 6 ft 3 in (1.9 m) and rugged appearance led to suggestions that he could earn a living merely by standing on a Broadway stage. This marked the start of his successful journey in theater, film, and television.

One of his standout performances came in the 1952 film The Bad and the Beautiful, where he starred alongside Kirk Douglas as a film director. Sullivan also toured the United States with Bette Davis performing readings of Carl Sandburg's poetry and co-starred with her in the 1951 movie Payment on Demand. In 1950, he appeared in A Life of Her Own and briefly took over the role of Simon Templar on NBC Radio's The Saint before being replaced by Vincent Price.

Sullivan's first leading TV role was in the 1956-1957 series The Man Called X, where he portrayed secret agent Ken Thurston, a part originally played by Herbert Marshall. He later starred in the adventure series Harbormaster and played sheriff Pat Garrett in the western series The Tall Man. He also had a role in Sam Peckinpah's film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, although his scene was initially cut from the final release.

Sullivan made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows and starred in Hallmark Hall of Fame productions, earning acclaim for performances such as his role opposite George C.
