Biography

Wayne Morris (February 17, 1914 – September 14, 1959), originally named Bert DeWayne Morris, was a prominent American actor and a distinguished fighter ace during World War II. Hailing from Los Angeles, Morris made his mark in the film industry with memorable performances in a variety of notable films, such as the acclaimed *Paths of Glory* (1957), *The Bushwackers* (1952), and the titular role in *Kid Galahad* (1937). His passion for aviation ignited while filming *Flight Angels* (1940), leading him to become a pilot.

As tensions escalated globally, Morris enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1942, setting aside his acting career to serve as a Navy flier. During his time aboard the USS Essex, he flew the F6F Hellcat and demonstrated exceptional skill by downing seven enemy aircraft and aiding in the sinking of five ships. His bravery earned him four Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Medals, despite facing initial rejections due to his size, which the Navy deemed unsuitable for fighter pilots.

After the war, Morris returned to the silver screen but struggled to regain his former stardom due to his extended absence. He primarily appeared in low-budget westerns throughout the 1950s. In a notable career shift in 1957, he made his Broadway debut in William Saroyan's *The Cave Dwellers*. Tragically, Morris passed away from a heart attack at the age of 45 while visiting the USS Bon Homme Richard. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
