James Arness
Biography
James Arness, celebrated as one of the stars of the longest-running series in U.S. television history, *Gunsmoke* (1955), was born on May 26, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Rolf and Ruth Duesler Aurness, of Norwegian descent. His father worked as a medical supplies salesman, while his mother later became a newspaper columnist. Although he participated in school plays at West High School, Arness initially harbored dreams of a maritime career. He briefly attended Beloit College before being drafted into the Army in 1943. During World War II, he trained at Camp Wheeler in Georgia before serving in North Africa, where he joined the 3rd Infantry Division. He suffered severe wounds during the invasion of Anzio, which led to a medical discharge.
While recuperating in a hospital, Arness pursued a radio course at the University of Minnesota, leading to a job as an announcer at a radio station. A move to Hollywood, encouraged by a friend, redirected his path toward acting. Trained at the Bliss-Hayden Theatre School, he caught the attention of agent Leon Lance, landing his first notable role in *The Farmer's Daughter* (1947).
Over the years, he transitioned from villainous roles to iconic characters, notably as a space alien in *The Thing from Another World* (1951). His career took a pivotal turn when John Wayne recommended him for the role of Matt Dillon in *Gunsmoke*. Despite initial hesitation, Arness embraced the opportunity, leading to a celebrated role that lasted until the show’s end in 1975. He continued acting in projects like *How the West Was Won* and *McClain's Law*, showcasing his enduring legacy in film and television.
