Biography
Christian Ludolf "Buddy" Ebsen Jr. (April 2, 1908 – July 6, 2003) was a distinguished American actor and dancer whose illustrious career spanned an impressive seven decades. He is perhaps best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Jed Clampett in the beloved CBS sitcom *The Beverly Hillbillies* (1962–1971) and as the titular character in the detective series *Barnaby Jones* (1973–1980).
Ebsen's journey in Hollywood began with a significant setback; he was originally cast as the Tin Man in the classic 1939 film *The Wizard of Oz*, but had to withdraw due to a severe allergic reaction to the aluminum dust in his makeup. His television debut came in 1949 with *The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre*, paving the way for a prolific television career. He made appearances in numerous series, including *Stars Over Hollywood*, *Bonanza*, and *Maverick*, where he often took on various villainous roles.
One of his notable early roles was Georgie Russel in the miniseries *Davy Crockett* (1954–1955), which showcased his talent to a wider audience. Ebsen also co-starred in the NBC adventure series *Northwest Passage* (1958–1959), where he played Sergeant Hunk Marriner alongside Keith Larsen. His versatility shone through in guest appearances on *The Andy Griffith Show* and *The Twilight Zone*. With his extensive body of work, Buddy Ebsen remains a celebrated figure in American entertainment history.
