David Stern

Biography

David Joel Stern (September 22, 1942 – January 1, 2020) was a prominent American attorney and business leader who served as the commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 2014. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in transforming the NBA into a global phenomenon, particularly during the 1990s and 2000s. Stern's strategic vision was instrumental in expanding the league's reach, particularly beyond U.S. borders, as he implemented initiatives such as international training camps, exhibition games, and the recruitment of a diverse array of international talent.

Under his leadership, the NBA established 12 international offices and extended its broadcast to over 200 territories in more than 40 languages, significantly enhancing global viewership. Stern also played a crucial role in founding the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the NBA G League, which serves as the league’s developmental platform. He was a pioneer in digital media, launching NBA.com, NBA TV, and NBA League Pass, thereby establishing a robust online presence for the league. Moreover, Stern was committed to social responsibility, initiating the NBA Cares program, which aimed to positively impact communities across the globe.
