Carl Reiner
Biography
Carl Reiner (March 20, 1922 – June 29, 2020) was a multifaceted American entertainer known for his work as an actor, comedian, director, screenwriter, and author. In the formative years of television comedy between 1950 and 1957, he made significant contributions to shows like Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour, working alongside notable figures such as Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, and Woody Allen. Reiner's collaboration with Brooks led to the creation of several celebrated comedy albums, starting with the 1960 release, 2000 Years with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks.
He is perhaps most recognized for his role as the creator, producer, writer, and actor of the beloved series The Dick Van Dyke Show, which aired from 1961 to 1965. Reiner also partnered with Brooks in the renowned comedy sketch "The 2000 Year Old Man" and appeared in films such as It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966). Additionally, he directed a number of Steve Martin’s early successes, including The Jerk (1979), as well as other comedies like Where’s Poppa? (1970) and All of Me (1984).
Throughout his career, Reiner participated in numerous television specials and guest appearances from the 1950s until his passing. He lent his voice to animated series like Father of the Pride (2004–2005) and authored over two dozen books, primarily in his later years. His accolades include 11 Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1999.
