Biography

Sir Michael John Gambon (October 19, 1940 – September 27, 2023) was a distinguished Irish-English actor celebrated for his remarkable contributions to theatre, television, and film. He began his illustrious career as one of the founding members of the Royal National Theatre under the guidance of Laurence Olivier. Over his expansive six-decade journey in acting, Gambon garnered three prestigious Olivier Awards and four BAFTA Television Awards, culminating in a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for his significant impact on the world of drama.

Gambon showcased his mastery in numerous classic Shakespearean roles, including Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Coriolanus. He was nominated for thirteen Olivier Awards, triumphing in three categories for performances in A Chorus of Disapproval (1985), A View from the Bridge (1987), and Man of the Moment (1990). His Broadway debut came in 1997 with David Hare's Skylight, earning him a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

His film journey began with Othello (1965), and he went on to star in notable films such as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), The King's Speech (2010), and Victoria & Abdul (2017). Gambon is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series from 2004 to 2011, succeeding Richard Harris.
