Biography
Gene Evans (July 11, 1922 - April 1, 1998) was a notable American actor recognized for his portrayals of rugged characters in film and television. Born in Holbrook, Arizona, he grew up in Colton, California. His journey in acting began during World War II, where he performed with a group of GIs in Europe, igniting his passion for the craft.
Evans made his film debut in 1947 and quickly became a familiar face in Hollywood, known for roles as tough cowboys, sheriffs, convicts, and sergeants. Notably, he collaborated extensively with director Samuel Fuller in films such as "The Steel Helmet," where Fuller famously chose Evans over John Wayne after witnessing his genuine soldierly demeanor. This partnership continued with features like "Fixed Bayonets!" and "Shock Corridor," showcasing Evans's versatility and dedication to his roles.
In television, Evans is perhaps best remembered for his role as the stern yet caring father, Rob McLaughlin, in the 1956-1957 series "My Friend Flicka." He also appeared in significant productions, including "Damn Citizen" (1958) alongside Keith Andes and "Dallas" in 1979. His impressive career spanned numerous genres, with guest roles in popular series like "Gunsmoke" and "The Legend of Jesse James."
In his later years, Evans returned to the stage and ultimately settled on a farm in Tennessee after his role in the original film adaptation of "Walking Tall." His contributions to the industry remain appreciated by fans and colleagues alike.
