Robin McLaurin Williams (July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014) was an iconic American actor and comedian celebrated for his extraordinary improvisational talent and ability to inhabit a diverse range of characters. Widely considered one of the greatest comedians in history, Williams garnered numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and five Grammy Awards.
His journey began in the mid-1970s, performing stand-up comedy in the vibrant scenes of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Williams gained widespread recognition as the quirky alien Mork in the beloved ABC sitcom Mork & Mindy (1978–1982). He made his film debut in a leading role in Popeye (1980) and later achieved an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Good Will Hunting (1997). His other notable Oscar nominations came from performances in Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989), and The Fisher King (1991).
Williams showcased his versatility in acclaimed dramas such as The World According to Garp (1982), Awakenings (1990), and Insomnia (2002), while also shining in family favorites like Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Jumanji (1995). Tragically, Williams passed away at the age of 63 in August 2014. At the time, he was battling Parkinson's disease, and his widow revealed that he had suffered from severe depression and anxiety. An autopsy later confirmed he had Lewy body dementia, which contributed to the struggles he faced in his final years.
