Holmes Herbert, originally named Horace Edward Jenner, was born on July 30, 1882, and passed away on December 26, 1956. This English character actor made a significant mark in Hollywood, with a prolific career spanning from 1915 to 1952.

Herbert relocated to the United States in 1912, where he became a prominent figure in the film industry, appearing in an impressive 228 films throughout his career. He made his cinematic debut during the silent film era, often taking on leading roles. As the talkies emerged, he transitioned into supporting characters in several iconic films, including *Captain Blood* (1935), *The Charge of the Light Brigade* (1936), *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938), and *Foreign Correspondent* (1940).

Among his notable performances, Herbert is especially remembered for his portrayal of Dr. Lanyon in the classic *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931). He carved out a niche in the horror genre, with appearances in films such as *The Terror* (1928), *The Invisible Man* (1933), and *The Ghost of Frankenstein* (1942). Additionally, he featured in several Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal in the 1940s.

Herbert's personal life included three marriages: first to actress Beryl Mercer, followed by Elinor Kershaw Ince, and finally, Agnes Bartholomew, who passed away in 1955. Herbert died at the age of 74, leaving behind a rich legacy in film history.
