Gordon Jones
Biography
Gordon Wynnivo Jones (April 5, 1911 – June 20, 1963) was a notable American character actor, recognized for his contributions to film and television, particularly as part of John Wayne's informal acting ensemble. He gained fame for his role as "Mike the Cop," the comic foil to Lou Costello in their beloved television series, and for portraying The Green Hornet in the first film serial based on the iconic radio program.
Born in Iowa, Jones excelled as a student athlete, showcasing his skills as a star football guard at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned the nickname "Bull." After a brief stint in professional football, he transitioned to acting, marking his film debut in 1933’s The Monkey's Paw. By 1937, he secured a contract with RKO Radio Pictures, and in 1940, he took on the title role in The Green Hornet.
His military service during World War II interrupted his burgeoning career, but he returned to acting post-war, featuring in John Wayne's popular films like My Sister Eileen (1942) and Flying Tigers (1942). Jones later embraced a more robust comedic villain persona, particularly in his collaborations with Abbott and Costello, beginning with The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap (1947).
Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, he remained active in both film and television, appearing in notable works like The Absent-Minded Professor and The Rifleman. His final role was in McLintock! (1963), shortly before his untimely death from a heart attack. Jones is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his enduring legacy in entertainment.
