Glynis Johns
Biography
Glynis Johns (October 5, 1923 - January 4, 2024) was a talented actress, dancer, musician, and singer, born in Pretoria, South Africa, while her parents were on tour. Renowned for her exceptional performances, she gained immense recognition for originating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in the Broadway production of A Little Night Music, a portrayal that earned her a Tony Award. Additionally, she charmed audiences as Winifred Banks in Disney's classic film Mary Poppins. Following the passing of Olivia de Havilland in 2020, Johns became the oldest living nominee for an Academy Award in any acting category.
In both her notable performances, Johns showcased her vocal talents with songs composed specifically for her, including the iconic "Send in the Clowns" by Stephen Sondheim and "Sister Suffragette" by the Sherman Brothers.
Her remarkable career also included an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1960 film The Sundowners. As one of the last remaining stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood and the classic era of British cinema, she was celebrated for her distinctive husky voice and vibrant personality, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
