Biography

Charles Lewis Napier (April 12, 1936 – October 5, 2011) was a versatile American actor celebrated for his extensive work in both film and television. Hailing from near Scottsville, Kentucky, Napier served in the U.S. Army before pursuing an education in the arts at Western Kentucky University, where he earned a degree in art. Before fully dedicating himself to acting, he spent time as a sports coach and art instructor.

Napier's career took off with his involvement in several cult classics directed by Russ Meyer, marking his film debut in Cherry, Harry & Raquel! (1969). He became renowned for his portrayals of tough, commanding figures, embodying roles such as police officers, soldiers, and villains with a gritty edge. Some of his most notable performances include the fiery country singer Tucker McElroy in The Blues Brothers (1980) and CIA officer Marshall Murdock in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985). He frequently collaborated with director Jonathan Demme, appearing in acclaimed films like The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Philadelphia (1993).

In addition to his film work, Napier made significant contributions to television, featuring in series such as The A-Team, The Oregon Trail, and both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Recognized for his commanding voice and distinctive features, Napier left a lasting impression as a character actor.

Napier passed away in Bakersfield, California, in 2011 at the age of 75 due to thrombosis. He also authored a memoir titled Square Jaw and Big Heart, reflecting on his life and career.
