Joe Besser
Biography
Joe Besser, originally named Jessel Besser, was born on August 12, 1907, and passed away on March 1, 1988. He was a notable American actor, comedian, and musician, celebrated for his whimsical humor and distinctive portrayal of wimpy characters. Besser gained widespread recognition during his time with The Three Stooges, appearing in a series of short films from 1957 to 1959. His comedic style was characterized by an endearing, childlike persona that resonated with audiences.
Before joining The Stooges, Besser showcased his talents on television, notably as Stinky, the mischievous man-child in The Abbott and Costello Show, where he became a fan favorite. He also played the role of Jillson, a maintenance worker on The Joey Bishop Show. His early career included performances with the comedy duo Olsen and Johnson, whose lively Broadway revues highlighted Besser's knack for slapstick humor.
In the 1940s, Besser transitioned to Hollywood after signing with Columbia Pictures, where he starred in numerous short comedies and musical films. He even filled in for Lou Costello on the radio, establishing himself firmly within the Abbott and Costello ensemble.
Besser's tenure with The Three Stooges marked a significant chapter in his life, although he maintained his unique comedic identity rather than imitating previous members. His time with the group ended when Columbia closed its two-reel-comedy unit in late 1957. Joe Besser passed away at the age of 80 due to heart failure, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and joy.
