Joe De Santis
Biography
Joseph Vito De Santis (June 15, 1909 - August 30, 1989) was a multifaceted American actor renowned for his work in radio, television, film, and theater, as well as his talent as a sculptor. Born to Italian immigrant parents in New York City, De Santis carved out a significant place in the entertainment industry.
His film career reached a pinnacle in 1962 with his acclaimed performance in "A Cold Wind in August." He also garnered attention for his roles in "I Want to Live!" and "The Brotherhood," showcasing his versatility onscreen. As television gained prominence, De Santis established himself as a dynamic character actor capable of portraying a range of characters, from suave antagonists to deeply emotional leads.
He was a familiar face on early television, appearing in notable series such as "Playhouse 90," "Studio One," and "Sheriff of Cochise." His impressive credits include regular appearances on the shows of Red Buttons, Martha Raye, and Sid Caesar, as well as guest spots on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." His recurring roles in series like "The Untouchables," "77 Sunset Strip," "Perry Mason," "Mission: Impossible," and various westerns, including "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza," further solidified his reputation.
In 1978, De Santis retired to Provo, Utah, to be nearer to family, where he lived until his passing in 1989 at the age of eighty due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
