William Tannen
Biography
William Tannen (November 17, 1911 – December 2, 1976) was an American actor hailing from New York City, renowned for his portrayal of Deputy Hal Norton in the popular ABC/Desilu western television series, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. He appeared in fifty-six episodes between 1956 and 1958, alongside Hugh O'Brian, who played Deputy Marshal Wyatt Earp.
In addition to his prominent role as Hal Norton, Tannen also took on the character of Gyp Clements in the 1955 episode titled "The Buntline Special." His journey in the series began on September 11, 1956, when the storyline shifted from Wichita to Dodge City, Kansas. Tannen's early appearances included notable episodes such as "Fight or Run," "The Double Life of Dora Hand," and "Clay Allison," the latter two inspired by real historical figures, the saloon singer Dora Hand and the gunfighter Clay Allison. While some of his roles were uncredited, his final credited performance was in "Doc Holliday Rewrites History" on May 6, 1958, featuring Myron Healey as Doc Holliday.
Beyond Wyatt Earp, Tannen played Ike Clanton in the 1964 episode "After the OK Corral" of the syndicated series Death Valley Days, where he shared the screen with Jim Davis as Wyatt Earp. He also made earlier appearances in Davis' series Stories of the Century, including an uncredited role as Dutch Charlie in "Milt Sharp," highlighting his versatility as an actor in the western genre.
