Giuliano Gemma
Biography
Giuliano Gemma (September 2, 1938 – October 1, 2013) was a celebrated Italian actor renowned for his remarkable contributions to the Spaghetti Western genre. His most iconic roles include the titular character in Duccio Tessari's films "A Pistol for Ringo" (1965) and "The Return of Ringo" (1965), as well as notable performances in Michele Lupo's "Arizona Colt" (1966) and Tonino Valerii's "Day of Anger" (1967). He also starred as Michael "California" Random in Lupo's "California" (1977).
Born in Rome, Gemma began his career as a stuntman before transitioning to acting, with his first significant role in Tessari's "Arrivano i titani" (1962). His versatility allowed him to appear in a wide array of films, including Luchino Visconti's "Il Gattopardo," where he portrayed Garibaldi's General. Although the popularity of Spaghetti Westerns waned, Gemma's career endured, and he remained a prominent figure in Italian television.
In 1976, he received a David di Donatello Award, akin to an Oscar, for his performance as Major Matiss in "The Desert of the Tartars." Beyond acting, Gemma was also a sculptor and contributed to the web comic "Man Born Again" (2012).
Tragically, Giuliano Gemma passed away in a car accident in Cerveteri, near Rome, on October 1, 2013. He was 75 years old, leaving behind a rich legacy in film and art. His daughter, Vera Gemma, continues the family tradition as an actress.
